In a world where gender-based violence remains a universal challenge, the role of advocacy and activism is crucial. Gender-based violence is a violation of human rights. It affects not only women and girls but also their families and communities.
The international statistics on gender-based violence are confronting. According to United Nations data, 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. About 30% of women in relationships report experiencing physical or sexual violence by their partner, and an intimate partner commits 38% of murders of women. Furthermore, the first sexual experience of approximately 30% of women was forced, with 45% of those under 15 at the time reporting the experience as coerced.
With a century-long history of service and advocacy, Zonta International envisions a world where no woman lives in fear of violence. One of the key programs supported by Zonta International is the "16 Days of Activism: Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women" campaign, which raises awareness of the global pandemic of women's rights violations.
During the 16 Days of Activism, from November 25 to December 10, Zonta clubs worldwide participate in this campaign. They engage in local, national, and international actions to influence the creation and implementation of laws to change gender-based attitudes and behaviours to end violence against women.
These efforts align with Sustainable Development Goal No. 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. By focusing on this goal, Zonta contributes to a broader global movement seeking to eradicate violence against women and girls.
Local Zonta Clubs have been at the forefront of this campaign, exemplifying how community organisations can contribute significantly to a global cause. Various activities and displays have been prominently featured in many communities to raise awareness about the issue.
You may have seen buildings and landmarks illuminated in orange, Zonta's signature colour? Or public spaces adorned with orange banners, ribbons, and decorations, creating a visually striking reminder of the campaign's message?
Or displays and interactive activities designed to engage the public and spread awareness about gender-based violence?
Or maybe public gatherings, speeches and vigils in honour of victims of gender-based violence?
These activities, seen in many towns and cities where Zonta Clubs are active, including our own, play a vital role in the global effort to combat gender-based violence.
As the 16 Days of Activism campaign concludes on Human Rights Day, it leaves a legacy of heightened awareness and a renewed commitment to continue the fight against gender-based violence.
